Historically a cramped, poor and overcrowded suburb housing the carpenters, potters and labourers who built the canals for the rich, since the 1980s the labyrnthic Jordaan has been aggressively gentrified. Whilst art galleries and specialist boutiques abound, the area retains a working class peppering.
